What is Diabetes
It is an illness that happens when the blood sugar or blood glucose in the blood increases. Glucose is the main source of energy in the body and we get this from the different food we eat. Insulin is created by the pancreas it helps regulate the glucose from the food and convert it to energy that it is used by cells. Sometimes your body does not create enough insulin. This causes the glucose to stay in the blood and does not reach the cells.
Over a period of time, if the glucose stays in the blood, it can have a serious health effect. Diabetes does not have a cure but you can manage it and still live a normal life.
Different between Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes
You have probably heard of these as they are pretty common types of Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes is usually detected in kids and young adults, that being said it can be detected at any age. Types 1 Diabetes is when the cells that create insulin in your pancreas are destroyed by your immune system. Due to the lack of insulin, the glucose in the blood increases and can have serious health implication. This is why if you have Type 1 Diabetes you need to take insulin shots daily to stay alive.
Type 2 Diabetes
This is one of the most common types of diabetes. It can occur at any age including in children, but it mostly occurs in middle-aged and older people. Type 2 Diabetes occurs when the Body does not create or use insulin efficiently which is also known as Insulin Resistance.
Gestational diabetes sometimes occurs in pregnant women. Usually, this kind of diabetes goes away when the baby is born. Women who have had Gestational Diabetes, have a higher chance of getting type 2 Diabetes later on in life. Sometimes diabetes during Pregnancy can be Type 2 Diabetes.
Is Diabetes Common?
It is much more common than you think it is, in 2015 there were 30.3 Million American that had Diabetes. About 1 in 4 People over the age of 65 have Diabetes. More than 1 in 4 people are not aware that they have diabetes. 90-95% of the people have Type 2 Diabetes. 84.1 Million people in the United States have Pre-diabetes and don’t know.
Diabetes is referred to as a microvascular disease because it ends up damaging small vessels. Diabetes causes kidney failure, blindness, and nerve damage.
Higher than normal blood glucose in the blood is one of the symptoms of diabetes but It is difficult to know if you have diabetes, especially type 2 diabetes. Most people don’t even know that they have Diabetes.
Type 1 Diabetes Symptoms
Type 1 Symptoms happen pretty fast and you can notice them in a matter of weeks and days. They are pretty bad as well if something is not done fast. Some of the common Symptoms of Type 1 Diabetes are.
1. Feeling Fatigued and Hungry all the time.
The cells in your body get its energy from the glucose that is converted from the foods you eat. Glucose is got to the cells by Insulin. If your body does not produce insulin or the cells in your body resist the insulin that is made, it is not possible for the glucose to get to the cells and provide it with the energy needed. This will make you more hungry and fatigues as normal.
2. Being Thirsty and Peeing Often
On an average, a person pees between 4 to 7 times a day. A person with diabetes pees a lot more than that. What is is the reason for this? As the glucose passes through the kidney it is reabsorbed by the body. But when your blood sugar goes up because of Diabetes, the kidney might not bring it back. This causes your body to produce more urine and makes you consume more fluids.
You will find yourself feeling thirsty and having more fluids all the time. Which will make you pee more than usual.
3. Itchy Skin and Dry mouth
Now that you are drinking a lot of fluids and peeing a lot, your body will be dehydrated as there is less moisture for other functions in the body. This will make your mouth and skin dry and your skin can even be itchy.
4. Blurry Vision.
The fluids in your body will change because your body is dehydrated, this could make the lenses in your eyes swell up. This could affect your vision and everything you see can seem blurry.
Some of the Type 2 Symptoms
It is really difficult to know if you have type 2 diabetes, but if your blood sugar has been high for a long time you might see the following symptoms.
1. Pain or Numbness in your feet.
Due to the high blood sugar for long periods of time, there will be nerve damage that can cause pain and numbness in your legs.
2. Yeast infection.
This can be a cause in men and women who are suffering from diabetes. Yeast is a bacteria that thrives on glucose that grows in warm places like under the Breast folds, around the sex organs and in between toes and fingers
3. Cuts and Wounds
Cuts and Wounds take longer to Heal. Having high blood sugar over a period of time can damage the nerves and hamper the blood flow. This makes it really difficult your cuts and wounds to heal fast.
How To Confirm if you have diabetes?
If you face any of the symptoms mentioned above, then you need to visit a doctor immediately. The symptoms and diagnosis of type 1 and type 2 diabetes are usually the same, the test to confirm if you have diabetes is the same as well. There are only a few more test you can do for Type 2 Diabetes.
The first test to diagnose your diabetes is a blood test. There are different kinds of blood test you can get to confirm your diagnosis. These tests have to be done on different days to confirm your diagnosis and must be done by a doctor. Make sure you don’t use a Glucose monitor or a finger stick at the health fair when you want to find out if you have diabetes.
1. A1C Test:
This is a blood test that is done over a period of 2-3 months, where the average blood sugar is noted. You do not have to fast before the test. A reading of 6.5 or higher of the A1c indicates diabetes.
2. Fasting Plasma Glucose:
As the name suggests here your blood sugar is checked after a 12 Hour fast (Where you don’t eat or drink anything for 12 hours). If the reading is more than 126mg/dl or higher then it indicates diabetes.
3. Random Plasma Glucose:
This test does not require fasting and can be done anytime during the day especially if you face frequent urination or dry mouth. A reading of more than 200mg/dl would mean you have diabetes.
4. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test:
Here a blood test is done before you have a sweet beverage and another test is done after 2 hrs of taking the beverage. If your reading is 200 mg/dl 2 hours after taking the beverage then you have diabetes
Treatment For Diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
Once you are diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes the treatment is pretty straightforward. You will have to take insulin shots on a daily basis.
- Take it with a Syringe.
- You can use an insulin Pen.
- Use an inhaler.
- You Can use an Insulin Pump.
At this point in time, these are the best options available. At this moment we do not have insulin pills. Make sure you choose the option depending on your lifestyle, your health plan coverage. A consultation with your doctor or a diabetes educator will show you the proper way to take insulin.
Type 2 Diabetes
The treatment for Type 2 Diabetes depends on how high your blood sugar is. this is determined by the A1c test. You might be able to manage your diabetes with the right diet and some weight loss, regular exercise. But most likely since type 2 diabetes is caught so late you will end up taking a diabetes pill such as metformin. If your blood sugar in your A1c test goes above a certain level, then you will have to take insulin shots. Make sure you know your Option and the best treatment that suits you.
At his point it does not matter if you have Type 1 or type 2 diabetes you need to be able to check your blood sugar on a daily basis. Before we tell you about Keto diet for Diabetics, Let us briefly understands what a Keto Diet does.
The keto diet has got a bad name for being a High-Fat low carb diet. It just seems like you can have bacon all day long. Even if you lose weight it seems like an unhealthy diet.
The Keto diet for Diabetics is about eating Health Fats, and Proteins like Avocados, salmon, chicken and non-starchy vegetable like broccoli, asparagus, spinach, mushrooms etc. The Keto diet for Diabetics eliminates sweets, sugars, starchy foods, sweet beverages, highly processed foods. This part should not come as a surprise. Ever tried losing weight having sugars and processed foods? it’s not going to happen.
The Keto diet is not an Animal-based diet or a protein-based diet but it is a High-fat low carb Diet. A keto dieter has to have healthy fats and proteins that come from animal and non-starchy vegetable that are grown above the ground. It is also about reducing the intake of carbs to 20grams a day.
You are basically telling the cells in your body to use fat as a source of energy and not carbs. Once you reduce your carb intake to 20–25grams a day, you will enter a new metabolic state called Ketosis.
Is a Keto Diet for Diabetics Safe?
This is a very important question because as a diabetic your diet is the most important thing in your life. You may think your medication is important or exercising is important or your supplements are important, but in reality, your diet is the most important part. It is what you eat and what you don’t eat that determines how your diabetes performs over time, how it affects your life and how it damages your internal organs or does it damage them.
Let’s Take Type 2 Diabetes first.
Type 1 and type 2 diabetes are completely different kinds of diseases. Type 2 Diabetes is a surplus of Insulin and is high insulin resistance in the body. So you have High Blood sugars as well as High Insulin resistance. You are almost an adult when you get type 2 Diabetes and you will notice that your blood sugar is going up and you cannot keep it down.
You then go visit your doctor where he is going to do some lab work and put you on a pill or two or three and if your Type 2 Diabetes does not respond he will also put you on insulin.
But wait a Minute. I thought Type 2 Diabetes was insulin resistant? Isn’t that right? YES IT IS
Basically type 2 Diabetes is a self-inflicted disease of diet. It’s a dietary disease. Type 2 is not a disease caused by insulin deficiency, it’s not a deficiency of a vitamin or mineral. it is caused because of too much of sugar in your diet.
As a Type 2 Diabetic, you will have to work hand in hand with a learned trusted doctor and you will have to take control of the Carbs in your diet. Here is the thing about carbs, whether the carbs are coming from broccoli or whether the carbs are coming from a donut its all sugar. All carbs ultimately break down into sugar.
So you will get sugar from eating broccoli but the sugar is so slowed down by the fiber content if you eat it raw or lightly steamed so you don’t really get an increase in your blood sugar or increase in your insulin level when you eat broccoli. But that’s not the case with eating carbs like a donut, cookie, pasta or rice.
So what is a Type 2 Diabetic to Do?
So should you eat the American Diet Association recommended a diet of anywhere from 25-50 grams of carbs per meal, or have 6 to 7 servings of whole grain bread every day? In our opinion its a no.
As per Dr Ken D Berry, MD this diet makes your diabetes worse. As a Type 2 Diabetic when your Haemoglobin A1c which is a blood test which gives a doctor of a 3 month average of what your blood sugar is doing.
If that number is even 1/10 of a point high, that means you are doing permanent irreparable damage to the retina in your eye, to the tiny arteries that feed your brain, to the tiny arteries that feed your heart, to your kidneys.
So when you have uncontrolled Type 2 Diabetes you are damaging your internal organs. If this damage continues for long you will turn up blind, or have a stroke, or have a heart attack, or be on dialysis, or be Impotent, or lose a toe or a leg
So even if you are on Diabetes medication including insulin, if you continue having carbs the damage will continue because of your diet.
So to Answer the question every Type 2 Diabetic should follow the Keto diet for Diabetics, In consultation with his or her doctor who knows about this diet.
If you continue eating the American Association Diet your diabetes will continue to get worse, and you will continue to gain weight and something disastrous happens to your health.
Only when you eat a Low Carb High Fat Diet like the Keto diet for Diabetics will you take control of your blood sugar, decrease the level of insulin resistance and you will reverse your type 2 Diabetes.

Because most doctors tell their patients with type 1 or 2 Diabetes that if your A1c is below 7 you are fine. That is completely wrong as per Dr Ken D Berry MD. His recommendation is that your A1c should be below 5.5.
So the danger of a Type 1 Diabetic following a low carb diet is that you can have low blood sugar and that is why you should follow a Keto diet for Diabetics only in consultation with a trusted doctor who truly understands type 1 diabetes and the Keto diet for Diabetics.
When a Type 1 diabetic has a Haemoglobin A1c count of 6.5 or 6.7 you are doing disastrous amounts of damage, to the tiny arteries that feed your body. As a Diabetic, you have to understand you can live to a ripe old age with Type 1 diabetes if you control your blood sugar, and you control your blood sugar you are going to lower your insulin levels
So when your doctor tells you that its ok to have 30-40g of carbs per meal just increase your insulin to account for it. That is suicidal advice for a type 1 diabetic. Do not do that. Your job is to eat as low carbs as possible and use the minimum amount of insulin necessary to keep your blood sugar within normal limits

What are the foods You should eat on a Keto diet for Diabetics?
A Keto Diet is a High Fat Medium Protein and Low carb diet. You are not allowed to have more than 20grams -25grams carbs a day and that is why this is a recommended diet for a Diabetic to keep the blood sugar under control.
Many people including doctors, nutrition scientist have a misconception that the Keto diet for Diabetics is really hard to follow because it lacks variety because it is a High Fat Medium Protein and Low carb diet. That is definitely not true. The problem is a lot of doctors and nutrition scientist don’t really know a lot about food. That is why we recommend a Diabetic consults a trusted doctor who can help you with your Diabetes and the Ketogenic Diet.
There is no requirement for a doctor to know how to cook, in fact, it is a known fact that doctors learn the most basic information about nutrition. In reality, an average doctor will know as much about food as a high school Biology teacher. Try asking a Chef and he will tell you the numerous options a Ketogenic dieter has when it comes to food.
Eat Fresh Foods.
One of the most important things you will notice on a Keto diet for Diabetics is that you will be looking for food in the refrigerator rather than the cabinet. Keto Food is generally perishable which is good for nutritional health. Any foods that can last for months on the shelf are a big no.
Except for nuts, seed, and oil which can be kept at room temperature. There aren’t many keto foods that are shelf-friendly. It’s usually the foods like flour, sugars, trans fats that allow foods to sit on the shelf for months without going bad (think of cereal, crackers, candy, cookies to name a few).
Any nutritionist will tell you not to eat this kind of food or you will gain weight and become diabetic. And yet many people still criticise the Keto diet for Diabetics. This is because of the lack of knowledge about the Keto diet foods. You will see that the Keto diet for Diabetics nudges you towards eating healthful whole foods. Foods that are low in carbs and high in fats and that are fresh.
When it comes to vegetables on a Keto diet for Diabetics they are separated by starch and non-starchy vegetable. As a Diabetic on a Ketogenic Diet, you must avoid starchy foods at all cost. Another important thing remember is this diet is not an animal-based diet and you should be wary of anyone who suggests that.

When you eat a steak or a pork chop you are eating the muscle of the animal, which is made up of protein and small amounts of fat. The cuts of meat like the pork chop have more fat on the edges. Feel free to enjoy fattier cuts of meats on or off the bone, you can also have bone broth found beef or pork and the animal fats as you wish.
Have fattier cuts of meat and bone broth is good on a Keto diet for Diabetics. Most of the broth and meats have sodium and potassium which your body will need in higher amounts because of the Keto diet for Diabetics.
Homemade broths or the one got in the farmers market tend to be more nutritious. Canned broths from the grocery store have unwanted ingredient in them. Always make it a had to check the labels before you buy your food and see the number of carbs, sugars, and preservative are mentioned.
Meats would include.
- Beef has 0 Carbs only Proteins and fats
- Pork Also has 0 Carbs just a little more Fat
- Lamb Has 0 Carbs and Fats and proteins

If you have been trying to lose weigh on a low-fat diet you have probably been eating skinless chicken. Well, all of that now changes and it is time to party! Eat any portion of meat you like and eat it with the skin.
Like other meats poultry also contains protein and fats and 0 carbs. So make sure you have the skin as it is a good source of fats for the Keto diet for Diabetics.
Poultry Would Include
Fish and Shellfish.
Fish is a great source of protein and unsaturated Omega 3 fats and has 0 Carbs. Fewer than 1 in five people eat the recommended two servings per week. Many people avoid fish because they are turned off by the mercury contamination.

While finfish are carb free, crustaceans (like shrimp, crab, lobster) have small amounts of digestible carbs and mollusk (like squid, mussel, clams, scallops, oyster, abalone, octopus) contain a bit more carbs. Here is the list enjoy.

Dairy can be a little tricky and you have to be careful when buying dairy products. They can range from 0 Carbs in Heavy Cream and certain cheese to 45-grams carbs per serving flavored yogurts. These also come with added sugars.
Dairy foods should be limited to few ounces per day and should be carefully chosen as to avoid extra carbs and added sugars. But it is still worth investing the time in researching the types of dairy products that fit the Keto Diet for Diabetics.

Remember only choose unflavoured dairy items, and stick to mainly full-fat foods Do not but flavored dairy products as they are filled with artificial sweeteners
Refrigerated No Dairy Products

2. Packages Slices Meats (Without Preservatives, additive, and Sugars)

5. Unsweetened nut or seed milk (Almond Milk)
You will see some of the foods mentioned above are borderline acceptable. but you have to read the label before you buy the Total carbs should be below 5 grams and it should not have preservatives, additives, and sugars.
It’s best to avoid fruits on a Keto diet especially if you are a Diabetic. There are a few fruits you can eat on a keto diet. These fruits have very low carbs like Strawberry, blackberry, blueberry raspberry.But you will have to speak with your doctor before you decide anything.
Food Not Suitable For a Keto Diet and a Diabetic
So far we spoke of the foods you can eat on a Keto diet. Now we will cover the foods you should avoid at all cost because of their High Carb and High Sugar Content.
When people are told that they have to give up fruits on a Ketogenic Diet they are pretty shocked. If you are a Diabetic you probably know that fruits are not good for you especially the sweet ones.
Fruits are a tasty treat, but sugary bananas, grapes are certainly not the same as spinach and broccoli. There is no place for sugary fruits in the Keto Diet. You can slowly add Low carb and low sugar fruits like strawberry, blackberry, blueberry etc once in a while. As a Diabetic, you would like to consult with your doctor before you decide to add any fruits.
Fruit Product To Avoid.
1. Dried or Dehydrated fruits such as raisins, dried apricots, dried mango. Removing the water from these fresh fruits increases the concentration of sugar in them.
2. Fruit Juices including freshly squeezed juices
3. Fruit Jams, jellies, marmalades, sauces etc
4. Freeze dried fruits such as blueberries, blackberries etc these have the water removed so only sugar and fiber remain
Grain To Avoid
Grains are not allowed on a Ketogenic Diet. Even a very small amount will put you over the carb allotment for the day. You must avoid grains at all cost.
Any foods made of wheat, rice, oats, cornmeal, barley or another cereal grain is considered grain product. Foods like Bread, Pasta, oatmeal breakfast cereal, tortillas, grits and other grains have very high carbohydrate content.
Keep in mind grains are not permitted, here are some of the grains
- Brown Rice
- Corn tortillas
- Rolled oats
- Wheat Flakes
- Avoid Starchy Vegetables
These vegetables have a lot of carbohydrates in the form you guessed it Starch. They also contain small amounts of sugar proteins and fats. Starchy Vegetables are not allowed on the Ketogenic diet. A simple way to remember this is to avoid vegetables that are grown under the Ground like carrots, Potatoes, sweet potatoes etc.
- Carrots Raw 1 Cup 8.7 grams of Carbs
- Pumpkin 1 Cup 9.3g grams of Carbs
- Beets 1 carbs 13.5 grams of carbs
- Peas 1 cup 14 grams of carbs
- Corn on Carb 1 ear 22 grams of carbs
- Boiled white potatoes 1 medium potatoes 25 grams
- Baked Sweet Potatoes 31 grams
- Avoid Beans and Legumes
This group of food does cause some confusion with Keto Dieters. Bean and Legumes are a good source of Protein, Vitamins, and minerals. But they are very high in carbohydrates and should be avoided.
- Black Beans
- Navy Beans
- Kidney Beans
- Garbanzo beans
- Split Peas
- Lima Beans
- Fava Beans
- Pinto Beans
Always keep a lookout for foods made of beans like Hamas and vegetarian burgers. Avoid them as they are high in carbs.
Sugars and Sweeteners
It should be obvious by now that sugar is bad for the Keto Diet For Diabetics and there are many sweeteners made of sugar. It is not possible to list all of them but your best bet is to learn the common ones.
Common Household Sweeteners
- Honey (Including Raw Honey)
- Mapel Syrup
- Agave Syrup
- Corn Syrup
- Rice Syrup
Some Sweeteners used in foods have very unfamiliar names. Use this general rule below to see if the item you purchase contains sugar or not.
- Anything with the word “Syrup” including High Fructose Corn Syrup, Glucose-Fructose Syrup, Pomegranate syrup.
- Any word ending with “OSE” including sucrose, dextrose, saccharose etc
- Anything with the word “sugar” including raw sugar, coconut sugar, invert sugar etc
- Anything with the word “Cane” including crystals, dehydrated cane juice, evaporated cane juice etc
- Fruit Juice Concentrate
Is there a thing such as “healthy sugars”? Not really. Sugar can be extracted from cane, beets, corn, coconut. Although some sugars are marked as healthier they all turn into glucose in the blood and increase blood sugar.
